I love how the river leads your eye into the photo, then the layers of rock against the layers of clouds. Wonderful!!

Agree with Heather about the peaceful view of the river and iconic badlands going theyr way side by side for eternity. Wandering what the big white stripe could have been, sediments of an ancien ocean or ashes from a high volcanic period. Appreciate your description as well.

Thanks Yves. From what the signs have said the black striping is usually a layer of coal and the white is likely volcanic ash.

A beautiful and interesting view of this well known river, Debra. Very nice detail on the badlands rock formations along the banks too. It looks so peaceful as it glides along toward the background sky.

The Red Deer River begins its journey in the Rocky Mountains of Banff National Park and flows eastward eventually joining the South Saskatchewan River. The river bank is characterized by badlands, formed by glacial meltwater, exposing various layers sedimentary rock such as sandstone, clay stone, coal, volcanic ash....
